Maggie Groat

Maggie Groat is an emerging video, performance and installation artist. Her recent work deals with banality, routine action, insignificant events and nostalgia. In 2007, she received her BFA from York University and in the fall of 2008 she will begin the Open Media Arts MFA program at The University of Guelph. Earlier this year, Maggie received a Canada Council for The Arts Grant awarded to Emerging Film and Video Artists.

24 Memories for my Future explores the tension between the still image and the moving one by employing traditional “tableaux vivant” methodologies. Digital video is used as an immediate means to document time-based - yet apparently still - everyday routine actions. This work attempts to draw awareness to the types of moments that are commonly chosen to be documented. In addition, the split second moments captured in a photo and the successive moments that compose the frames of moving images are emphasized through the impossible attempt to stay perfectly still.
